9. Station: Not a plant, not an animal - mushrooms in the grove

Mushrooms are mysterious living things, they form a separate country among living things besides plants and animals. They have properties that are more similar to plants (they reproduce by spores, which is characteristic of several plant species), and also those that are more similar to animals (their cell walls contain chitin, the same material that builds the hard outer armor of some insects). They range in size from microscopic species that cannot be seen with the naked eye to the largest living creatures on our planet. In everyday speech, the word mushroom is often used only for the fruiting body, even though the organism consists of a complex, extensive network of dense filaments. We can therefore say that a beautiful porcupine fruiting body, for example, is just as much a part of the porcupine mushroom organism as an apple fruit is of an apple tree. Among the large mushrooms (mushrooms visible to the naked eye) of the grove, you can find poisonous (e.g.: carbolic) and edible (e.g.: grove) champignons, field cloves, funnel and snake mushrooms, nudibranchs, woolly ink mushrooms, sand priest’s cap mushrooms, devil’s chariot. champignon mushrooms or split-plate mushrooms.

Shaggy Ink Cap (Coprinus comatus): This mushroom species with its characteristic appearance, whitish color, woolly cap, squishy, quickly decomposes (autolyzes, i.e. spreads its spores by liquefying itself) can be easily distinguished from other ink mushroom species. It likes soil rich in nutrients, it can be found in fields, meadows, gardens and parks and on forest edges. An edible medicinal mushroom, the active ingredients in it have a beneficial effect on regulating the blood sugar level of our body. Mushrooms grown in the wild and collected for food should always be inspected by a mushroom inspector!!!

Chariot mushroom (Pleurotus eryngii): It got its name from its way of life. It breaks down the dead parts of the roots of the field mushroom, i.e. the devil’s chariot, i.e. if we want to find such a mushroom, we first look for the dried branches of the field mushroom. One of our tastiest mushrooms, it can be grown and can be found on the shelves of grocery stores. Medicinal mushroom, it has a beneficial effect on digestion, blood sugar and blood pressure. Mushrooms grown in the wild and collected for food should be inspected by a mushroom inspector.

Field funnel mushroom (Clitocybe rivulosa): Our small, common mushroom species is difficult to distinguish from other funnel mushrooms and mushroom species of similar size. Its choice of soil is undemanding, from May to November it can be found practically in any grassy meadow. Muscarine is toxic, its toxin, if ingested, causes parasympathetic nervous system symptoms (sweating, salivation, tremors, pupil constriction, decreasing pulse and blood pressure) after a short incubation period (15 minutes – 120 minutes).

Do you know? According to our current knowledge, what is the largest living creature on Earth?

Surprisingly, it’s not an elephant or a whale, but a mushroom. The filaments of a stump mushroom (Armillaria ostoyae) living in the Malheur National Forest in eastern Oregon cover an area of more than ten km2, and according to researchers, the estimated age of the mushroom colony belonging to the same organism is approx. 2400 years. With this performance, it is probably not only the largest, but also the oldest living creature on Earth.
