12. Station: Semi-open dens

We have burrow-nesting bird species that are not attracted to artificial burrows with small openings. The dens, which are made with a half-open front, offer their inhabitants the opportunity to look out of the nest during the breeding and chick-rearing period, as if keeping an eye on their surroundings. Such birds of ours are, for example, the house and garden rusttail, the gray flycatcher, but the burrow made with a half-open front can occasionally be occupied, usually on the ground or in hollows in the ground, in rich vegetation (e.g. the roots of washed-out trees). like european robin.

Common redstart (Phoenicurus phoenicurus)

Sparrow-sized, slender bird, found here from April to September. It likes deciduous forests, meadows divided by shrubs, floodplain forests, parks and orchards. The male has a colorful pattern, its throat and ear spots are black, its forehead is white, while its breast, lower part and tail are rusty, orange-red. It spawns once a year, at which time it lays 5-7 (rarely 10) eggs, the chicks are fed by both the male and the female. It mainly feeds on insects, caterpillars, and spiders, but before the start of the migration period, fruits such as elderberries also supplement its menu. A long-distance migrant, it spends the winter in tropical parts of Africa. Its number is constantly decreasing for unknown reasons. It is a protected bird in Hungary.

European Robin (Erithacus rubecula):  Our frequent, resident bird, easily recognizable by its striking orange face and breast patch. Active during the day, it feeds mainly on insects, spiders and worms from spring to autumn, and in winter it supplements its diet with berries. It basically nests in hollows in the ground covered by vegetation, among the roots of washed-up trees, or in crevices, but it is also well adapted to the human-made environment, so we come across its nest in the most surprising places (e.g.: flower pots, watering cans, garden furniture, etc.). You can also occupy our artificial den with a half-open front.

Do you know? What color is the egg of the robin?

The robin’s eggs are decorated with reddish spots on a yellowish, off-white background, similar to the adult bird’s beak color.
