Which artificial burrow is preferred by which bird species as a breeding place depends primarily on the size of the given bird species. With our largest nesting box, we can attract larger birds to nest. The “D” type nest can also be occupied by long-eared wagtails, warblers, crested barnacles or starlings.

European roller (Coracias garrulus) Likes temperate deciduous forests, floodplain forests and scrub. When choosing its habitat, it is important to have old, primarily soft-trunk trees in its surroundings, because it uses their hollows as a nesting place. Its main food is straight-winged insects (grasshoppers, locusts) and smaller vertebrates (lizards, frogs, baby gliders, small mammals). Migratory bird, found in Hungary from April to September, spends the winter in Africa. She performs her nuptial dance in the air, and after mating she lays 4-5 white eggs in her nest. One of our most colorful and strikingly beautiful birds, popularly known as blue jay, blue raven, is protected in Hungary.

Starling (Sturnus vulgaris) Named for its sociable lifestyle. From the middle of the summer, it likes to join large flocks, and during its migrations it even likes to mix with other species (e.g. ladybird, pine thrush). With its feeding habits, it helps and annoys farmers at the same time. It eats various insects, earthworms, crickets, horse lice, and hymenoptera, but at the same time it devastates orchards (e.g. grapes) and grain crops. As a spawning ground, natural tree trunks, e.g. it chooses former dens of woodpeckers, prefers wooded forests, parks, and tree rows. A short-term migrant, it usually spends the winter in the Mediterranean, occasionally there may be smaller wintering flocks.
